Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2017

GAAD 2017 logo

May 18th, 2017 marks the 6th Global Accessibility Awareness Day, or GAAD.  This event started in 2012 when a single blog post posted by Joe Devon, a Los Angeles based web developer, was stumbled upon by Jennison Asuncion, a Toronto accessibility professional.  Together they came up with the idea to call attention to the importance of making websites, mobile devices, documents and other technologies accessible to people with varying types of disabilities.

This event has steadily grown year over year.  Although the target audience of GAAD are the companies and individuals that design and develop technology and products for people with disabilities, the broader goal is to raise awareness of the challenges faced by this diverse community as well as the solutions available today that support accessibility for all.

Some suggested activities outlined on the GAAD website include checking your website for digital accessibility. Can it be navigated without a mouse? Is there sufficient color contrast and can the fonts be enlarged so that low vision visitors can read content? Is the order of the elements on your pages defined so that it can be read by an assistive device in the correct order?

There are also public and virtual events for further discussion, networking, and some fun.

CrawfordTech has always been fully committed to providing services and solutions that automate the process of creating accessible documents. Our products support virtually every format, including Accessible PDF, Accessible HTML5, Large Text, Audio, Braille, eText, and Voiceye barcodes. With our underlying MasterONE architecture, it’s easier than ever to create any and all formats from a single set-up.

We believe that the only way to eliminate discrimination in communication is to be pro-active in your accessible document strategy, making the delivery of accessible documents “business as usual”. Our own website was designed and built to be fully accessible, and is WCAG 2.0 compliant.
